Some book stuff

The book club I belong to just finished The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. I liked it, though most of the group thought it was chick lit that aspired to be more than chick lit but didn't quite make it. Regardless, we had a good discussion about it, I think. We're still debating the next book choice, but we're leaning toward Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking.

I want to check some books out of the library, but I don't want to go in because I owe them so much money in overdue fines. I had The Tenth Circle out for about three months and I didn't even like it. I also had The World Below for an unreasonable length of time. I usually like Sue Miller's books, but I just couldn't get into this one for some reason. Meanwhile, did you know that if you click on any of the links that lead to Amazon from this site and buy something there that I will get, like, a couple of pennies for the referral? And if enough people do that, then I could afford to pay my library fines and check out some more books.

If I did check out some books, I'd get some by Laurie Notaro. I can't believe I didn't know about her until a few months ago. Seriously, it's as if all of her book titles are about me. I am a dork. I am incredibly clumsy. I am a total idiot. I was even a fat bride!

Anyway, now I'm re-re-reading The Lord of the Rings (and before that I re-re-re-re-re-re-re-read The Hobbit). See, I told you I was a dork.

So ... What have you been reading? Leave me a comment and give me some ideas, will you?.

I've been raving about "A Dirty Job" by Christopher Moore. It's very difficult to describe, but essentially it's about a man who, after the death of his wife, discovers that he's a "soul collector" and must retrieve people's souls from the objects where they're stored. There's also a subplot involving the underworld's attempts to take over the city. There are characters named Minty Fresh and Cindy Lou Hu. The book is alternately hilarious and incredibly sad, and I may actually go back to the library this week to check it out again.

Been reading "A Thousand Acres" by Jane Smiley, and have enjoyed it so far.

I might snag some of your recommendations for a book club a friend and I are starting :)

I just finished The Historian -- kind of a new spin on Dracula but without all the melodrama. Very good.

sorry this doesnt pertain to your post AT ALL, lol, but.. I saw the pictures of your beltie on that girl's blog, and I wanted to know about her because my mom is considering doing some beltie breeding. If you know anything about that sort of thing let me know because she is gorgeous.

Karenology -- I liked that book, too. It would be a good one to discuss, as well. I thought it would be interesting to re-read King Lear to compare the two, but never got around to it.

Jen -- I like the way you describe that (Dracula without the melodrama). I'll definitely check it out, thanks.

szabk528 -- It's OK, I LOVE to talk about the dog. It's actually kind of surprising I didn't mention her in this post.

She's a great dog, with the best personality. Very intelligent, tons of energy, very sporty, but also snuggly and sweet. She's the perfect size, about 25 pounds.

And you're right, she is gorgeous!

Might be time to post some new pictures ...

Ok, first of all, you were so NOT a fat bride! Books... I read "Hannibal Rising" because I wanted to before the movie came out, and I really liked it, so I went and read all the other ones. "Hannibal" was awful. Now I'm reading Stephen King's "Lisey's Story," which is confusing so far, and "Glass Castles," which I like better.

So Alice -- if I wasn't a fat bride, where the hell did all that cleavage come from?

Lisey's Story is confusing all the way through, by the way. Plus, there's the added annoyance of the major character having a name that is troublesome to pronounce. So basically every time you come across the name in the text, you have to stop to think about it. Lizzy? Liss-ee? Lee-see? What was it again? Should I flip back to the page where he says how its pronounced or keep reading? And then you've lost your place. I don't like books where the character is named Siobhan, either. It's a very pretty name, but every time I read it I think See-oh-ban. That's not right. What was it again? Shi-bahn? No, Shi-vaughn. Right, Shi-vaughn. Now where was I again?

Interesting, btw, that according to Amazon "Glass Castles" is listed as being similar to the Didion book.
